Exploring the meaning of Speed, with Hoka and the Mach X 3
Tempo, Hoka and creative studio Teel Studios have collaborated on a photo essay exploring what fast means
When Tempo and Hoka came to us to shoot the Mach X 3, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the colourways. They are bold, bright and don’t blend in. We also know that the Mach X 3 wants to go fast, but it’s still an everyday trainer, so I wanted this shoot to live in the real world.
In Marrickville, the limits on how you can paint your run-of-the-mill warehouse seemingly don’t exist. What would otherwise be a mundane industrial sprawl becomes a photographer’s playground. In years past, I’ve spent hours in this zone shooting fashion, short films, or just for fun. Coming back here to shoot three runners exploring the alleys and getting heckled by dusty old panel beaters felt nostalgic.
Rory, El and Sissi were absolutely the right runners for the job. We all met for the first time at “the yellow warehouse,” and I knew straight away we were in for a fun afternoon. They were down for whatever it took to get the shot, but just as content hanging out and forgetting I was even there. I wanted the shoot to feel observational and unstaged, and I think that shows in the photos.
