The 40th edition of Australia's fastest marathon

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018, the Gold Coast Marathon is the most well known race in Australia. Taking place in winter, the warm climate of the Gold Coast provides a much needed escape for many runners. This race also attracts a strong tourist crowd, most notably from Japan.

An overnight downpour left the course damp under foot, but it didn't stop large crowds from supporting the athletes.

The men's race had a thrilling finish, with Kenyan Kenneth Mungara out-kicking Japan's Kenta Murayama to win by 1 second. In the women's race, Ruth Chebitok won in 2:24:49 (a new course record), with Australian Jess Trengove coming in second.
