An idyllic day on one of Australia's most picturesque road courses

Late May in Sydney brings the end of autumn and the city’s last opportunity for warm, sunny days for a few months. From June until September, when the Sydney Marathon is held, runners will endure the full unpredictability of Australia’s weather. Sydney’s running conditions are typically a little more favourable than its southern neighbour Melbourne, but fickle all the same.

For many, this race will be their last event until the marathon, or maybe even beyond. A big city race like this is always the start of many journeys and the end of so many others.

The Sydney Half Marathon isn’t an obvious PR course (although it is typically won in 63-64 minutes), perhaps owing to its many twists and turns as it snakes its way around icons like the Botanic Gardens, the Opera House, and under the famous Harbour Bridge.

But what it lacks in raw pace it makes up for in its beauty. We sent Sydney photographer Esjay along to capture all the action.

The men's winner was Victorian Joel Tobin-White, crossing the line in 65:22, 15 seconds ahead of perennial favourite Liam Adams. Incredibly it was Tobin-White's debut at the distance, although it's unclear if he plans to continue with the half marathon.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Olympian and recent Comm Games participant Eloise Wellings took out the women's race.

Wellings, a local Sydney resident, crossed the line in 75:18, ahead of Fasika Metafriya and Cassandra Fien.
