Hyberboost Edge: Two Days in LA

Scenes from adidas’ Global Launch

Recently, Tempo Journal was invited to the global launch of the adidas Hyperboost Edge in Los Angeles, a two-day extravaganza in Santa Monica. Our man on the ground, photographer Evan Perigo, got a stack of great shots from what he describes as a top-notch event. Read his report and check out his images below.

First though, just what is the new Hyperboost Edge? In the simplest terms, it’s a max cushion super trainer with no plate or shank. As the name suggests, it’s an evolution on adidas’ Boost and Ultraboost shoes, and it relies on a new, ultralight beaded TPEE (thermoplastic polyester elastomer) foam the brand is calling Hyperboost Pro. It’s highly responsive and early reviews suggest this thing could carry you all the way from daily training runs to fartleks where you need to pick up the pace during segments, or speedier long runs. For those prioritising protection over speed, or who simply don’t like an aggressive carbon-plated race-day shoe, the Hyperboost Edge could even be a marathon contender.

Here are some key stats, based on a US men’s 9. The Hyperboost Edge stands 45mm at the heel with a 6mm drop to a 39mm forefoot, weighs 247g (a touch heavier than the adidas shoe it feels hard not to compare this to, the EVO SL at 223g), features a comfortable Primeweave upper, and has a very durable Lighttraxion outsole with full-length coverage. RunRepeat has already thrown the shoe through full on-road and in-lab testing, including cutting it in half, and the objective measurements are state-of-the-art. Its cushioning, energy return and responsiveness are suburb. It’s priced at A$340 (US$200) and available in limited release now (with many sizes already sold out) before a wider drop in the near future.

“The treadmill day was my personal favorite. It was staged in a dark warehouse with three zones going simultaneously, each dedicated to highlighting one of the Hyperboost Edge’s key qualities.”

Here’s Evan’s report on how the launch went down:

The Hyperboost Edge activation brought all the vibes: a dark and gritty warehouse product demonstration for the first day, followed by a light-and-bright beach run and party on day two.

The first day was dedicated to learning about the new shoe. We had a nice talk from the top designer recapping the experience and the purpose of the shoe. From there everyone got to see it in action on the treadmill. The whole presentation was short and sweet, with no gimmicks, and the production was top notch.

“Day two was a full-on beach day in Santa Monica, and lived up to everything a classic sunny day in LA is meant to be.”
