The 43-year-old Fifth Avenue Mile record finally falls

Scottish master Josh Kerr stormed into New York City to defend his 2023 crown in the Fifth Avenue Mile. His run came just four days after he took a disappointing fifth place in the much-hyped Diamond League Zurich 1500m. This time out, everything went right for him as he destroyed Sydney Maree’s enduring course record of 3:47.52, which has stood since the inaugural race in 1981.

Kerr took more than three seconds off the record, for 3:44.3.

In the pro women’s race, American Karissa Schweizer took top honours in a time of 4:14.8.

Beyond the elite fields, fine weather provided a perfect day for thousands of amateur runners to test their mettle on the most iconic road mile race in the world, a straight arrow shot down 20 blocks of this legendary thoroughfare.

Enjoy these scenes from photographer Joe Hale. “No rain for the first time in probably five years meant some nice light to play with,” Joe noted.
