Titanic battles as Jack and Rose reclaim national titles
What a magic night! The energy for the second On Track Nights: Zátopek:10 event was electric. Hyped crowds and athletes in top form made it an unmissable meet.
A highlight was watching Jack Rayner take his fourth straight 10,000m national title. Even better than his title win in second place last year, behind Irishman Andrew Coscoran, Rayner won the race outright with a time of 28:26.12. He joins the legendary Steve Moneghetti as only the second male athlete to win four consecutive Australian 10,000m titles.
Rose Davies claimed her third 10,000m national title (2021, 2022, 2024) in 32:21.71 by holding defending champion Lauren Ryan to second in a dramatic last-straight finish after a seesawing race.
Rising star Cameron Myers broke his own U20 3000m national record after the 18-year-old bested all comers in the open 3000m. His choice not to run in the 3000m U20 De Castella paid off when he set a new PR and Under 20 record of 7:41.11 with his win against the older men.
Linden Hall dominated the head-to-head against Abbey Caldwell in the women’s 3000m, coming home almost eight seconds ahead in a time of 8:43.02.
The fans loved every second of it, and Cam Myers captured the spirit of it all when he told Athletics Australia:
“Distance running in Australia has gone to a new level and all athletics in general. It’s great to be a part of it and it’s great to have people actually wanting to come down and watch these sort of events. That’s something that is big for the sport, especially domestically.”
Enjoy the action.
