USATF Indoor Championships: Day Two Gallery
A load of Hoey, Hiltz and Hobbs
Wow, day two did not disappoint.
Josh Hoey set a new American record in the 800m, with a time of 1:43.24, the second-fastest indoor time ever recorded. (He bettered Donavan Brazier’s 2019 time of 1:44.21, but Wilson Kipketer of Denmark’s almost-20-year-old 1997 world record of 1:42.67 still stands.)
Both Nikki Hiltz and Hobbs Kessler won double national titles in the 3000m, on Saturday, and the 1500m, on Sunday. It’s a rare feat, and in the women’s events it hasn’t been achieved since Shelby Houlihan did it in 2020, after also achieving the double in 2017 and 2018. This year’s championship saw Houlihan make her return after a four-year doping ban; she came second in the 3000m and fourth in the 1500m. Hiltz’s 1500m win is their third straight national title for that distance.
After winning his first-ever US title in the 3000m on day one, Hobbs led from the front for the whole 1500m on the second day of the meet. Taking control of the race, he held Sam Prakel – the last man to achieve the 1500m and 3000m double, in 2023 – to silver.
